In former times, all houses had a central fireplace. It was used to heat the main living room and was known as the room with the fire. The whole family gathered together in this room to talk about how the harvest was going, what needed doing in the vineyard, gossip of the village or just to tell each other stories. Some holiday properties have kept their hearths and others have installed new modern glass fronted ones.
A lot of the holiday accommodation use the prefix: CAL. This is Catalan and means "the house belonging to". In the small villages of the Priorat, each and every one of the houses has a "nickname" and everyone who lives in the house is known by this name. Sometimes it is related to their surname, but often it is a lot older than the family or refers to someone who lived there many years ago.
