Not long ago, the Priorat was dominated by rich families who owned the land surrounding each village. They had stately homes in the village, usually on the main street and the people of the village generally worked their land for them as tenant farmers. Some of these mansions have now become country lodgings for visitors to the region to enjoy.
A lot of the holiday accommodation use the prefix: CAL. This is Catalan and means "the house belonging to". In the small villages of the Priorat, each and every one of the houses has a "nickname" and everyone who lives in the house is known by this name. Sometimes it is related to their surname, but often it is a lot older than the family or refers to someone who lived there many years ago.
