VisitPriorat.com has made a careful selection of the places to stay in the Priorat region and we have devised a system to identify the best establishments. Our quality control can be easily identified by the tortoises. We base our decision on quality-price, service, surroundings, making clients feel at home etc...
Our tortoise has come to mean many things. We like to associate it to the idea of the Slow Food movement - a snail moves slowly as does a tortoise. It takes its time to enjoy things which a quick visit would miss. Our tortoise also has historic origins as it was the symbol of the Carhusian monks of Scala Dei. The monks were principally vegetarian, but when one of them fell ill, he was allowed to eat turtle meat as he needed extra protein (turtle and tortoise is the same word in Catalan: "Tortuga", which unfortunately in English has two translations and causes some confusion).

A lot of the holiday accommodation use the prefix: CAL. This is Catalan and means "the house belonging to". In the small villages of the Priorat, each and every one of the houses has a "nickname" and everyone who lives in the house is known by this name. Sometimes it is related to their surname, but often it is a lot older than the family or refers to someone who lived there many years ago.
