Introduction

The DO Priorat was legally recognised in Chapter IV of the decree dated 8th September, 1932 (what is known as the "Estatuto del Vino" or "Wine Statute") which became a law on 26th May, 1933.

Unfortunately, this new law was not fully recognised and thus not put into force until a few years later due to the social and political instability leading up to and after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The "Denominación de Orígen del Priorato"was officially constituted on 19th September, 1953, appointing Mr. Ramón Vidal-Barraquer Marfà as first chairman (He was also the director of the Wine centre in Reus known as the: "Estació Enológica") and the first regulations were published in the State Bulletin (BOE) on 11th August, 1954.

Regulations
As with all regulatory bodies, the DOC Priorat must guide, control and check on all wine production in its specified area. It checks on the quality of its wines in order to guarantee the reputation of making quality wines which it has acheived in the last twenty years. It maintains a vineyard register and also controls the grape production and entries and exits during the grape harvest for every member winery.

In 2000, the DO Priorat was elevated to DOC (or DOQ in Catalan) Priorat. There are only two "Qualified" wine appellations in Spain: Priorat and Rioja. The DOCs have to conform to stricter guidelines and regulations than the other wine appellations. For example,
